Here we are almost half-way through 2022 and I’m only settling into some sort of creative flow after what only can be described as surviving the ‘rabbit hole’.

Now, I’ve not been shy in sharing with you how I have been struggling with mental health issues for as long as I can remember – and I was very proud of my work to keep them at bay quite well. Why, I even wrote a book ‘Write to Heal – 10 Ways to Use Writing and Words to Boost Your Well-being and Transform Your Life‘, in which I shared ten simple and effective tools to help take back control of your life and develop a more positive mindset to cope (I still stand by this book – some great stuff in there, if only I had listened to my own good advice!).

As it turned out my mental health was badly impacted by culmination of extenuating events (a stressful international move, building a house, lockdowns and health issues). Instead of things improving as Covid-19 eased it tight-grip and we moved in our new home, I was in freewill mode tumbling further and further in the dark abyss. Of course, I tried a number of things to save myself… but nothing worked. It was an incredibly frightening time.

Finally, I spoke to a GP who suggested that MENOPAUSE might just be the culprit. I was a little sceptical as I didn’t get the usual symptoms (night sweats, hot flashes, memory fog…). No, I am one of the few women where menopause causes SEVERE DEPRESSION (and I mean it was scarily severe). Fortunately, I was given HRT (Hormone Replacement Treatment) and within a week I felt like a completely different person, more like myself again.

So, at long last, I am rebuilding my life and finding my way to creating something that gives me purpose, provides interaction with people and allows me scope to write. I have almost completed the first year of my Masters in Creative Writing and looking forward to enjoying a summer reading a few more books from my TBR list.

If you are eagerly awaiting Book 2 in The Naked Knitting Club series – please be patient a little longer, until normal service is resumed. Thank you – it will be worth the wait! In the meantime, why not grab a copy of Book 1: Casting On (or re-read it).

The Naked Knitting Club – Book 1

UPDATES 2021 – Books etc.

, , , ,

Well, after the rollercoaster year of 2020 I’m just about settling down again mid-2021. Between an international move, the endless challenges of renovating (no… more like a full build!), finishing my degree, compiling the ‘UPLIFT Book’ and dealing with the impact of Covid — I am finally able to breathe again!

Now, I have some time to consider my next step as expectations and best-laid plans all went out the window. I will definitely continue to write and am already half-way through the second book in ‘The Naked Knitting Club’ series. YES — after the success of book 1 – Casting On, quite a few people have been asking for book 2, excited to know what happens next to our lovely protagonist Cate. With that in mind, Book 1 has been given a new cover which will be continued across all the books in the series, and I have to say I love it!

There will be some promotional work on Book 1 over the next few months, with Book 2 due for release towards the end of this year in time for Christmas. I am also gearing up to record an audio version of Book 1 which will hopefully come out at some stage in 2022. Don’t forget you can grab a copy of The Naked Knitting Club – Book 1: Casting On (eBook and paperback) on the Amazon store.

Tiny Tim: God bless Us, Every One!

— Charles Dickens, ‘A Christmas Carol’

Oh my goodness, it is hard to believe we are coming to the end of yet another year. Where does the time go? It has been a rollercoaster ride of a year for me and I wanted to share with you some of my literary highlights. And keep scrolling to the bottom where you will find a little extra Christmas story for you…

I re-publishing the first book in THE NAKED KNITTING CLUB series. I was delighted to bring the first book back out into the world under my own terms, and all is aligned for me to continue to write the follow-on books (yes, it is a series…) and publish with ALP House Publishing. This has taken the pressure off and I feel much happier to have control. Book 2 will be released in the first part of 2020 – click here to sign up to the mailing list to be kept informed.

I enjoy writing and 2019 also saw the ‘birth’ of two fiction books by Janet Groom. The first was WRITE TO HEAL, an opportunity for me to tell my own personal trauma to triumph journey (my old stories) and share 10 amazing techniques to aid healing using the power of WORDS and WRITING, from working on mindset through to forgiveness. In 2020, I am planning to set up an online course to accompany the book, and hold some ‘live’ workshops focussing on some of the key techniques and how to use them.

Then I has the privilege to work with ELLIE J. HART to assist her to produce her beautiful book of 52 quotes on the topic of ‘I CHOOSE…’. I adore this book and love that you can flick through and use the quote as a positive prompt for your day ahead. Ellie was inspired to write her book after reading the amazing story of Holocaust survivor Dr Edith Eger’s book ‘The Choice’, as it helped her transform her own life from victim to winner.

Then I discover an ebook I had written a few years ago LIVE THE RAINBOW, and decided to update it and re-release it. It is a bright book about using the power of colours to influence our lives in a positive and uplifting way. It includes a basic introduction to CHAKRA, CRYSTALS, and even rainbow-coloured FOODS.

Finally, the year ended on a high note as I was honoured to be part of an anthology book ‘VOICES OF HOPE’ compiled by Brenda Dempsey. It felt good to share my own personal journey from victim to finding my way to a happier life through books, words and writing. You can read my story, along with 30 other stories, in the book and be inspired that even when life throws you a curveball there is still HOPE to shift things around and create a life you enjoy. Oh, I am a now an Amazon Bestselling author!!

So, I am excited to get going with 2020, book 2 in The Naked Knitting Series is underway, and I have ideas for a few more books – some fiction and a few more non-fiction. Additionally, watch out for Creative Writing workshops and Retreats happening in the UK next year, and get started with writing your own books. If you are interested in writing your book or joining a workshop/retreat, please contact me – click here

HAPPY WRITING IN 2020

The Power of GRATITUDE

, , , ,

Gratitude is a powerful catalyst for happiness. It’s the spark that lights a fire of joy in your soul.

— Amy Collette

Today is THANKSGIVING in the United States of America. A day to remember the struggles of the early settlers and how the pilgrims sat down with the Native American Indians and gave thanks together.

Having lived previously in the States, I loved this holiday. It brought people together across the divides and allowed families, friends, neighbours and strangers to sit down and over a meal to give thanks.

Fast forward a few years into my spiritual journey and I realise that every day is the day to give thanks. Finding the things, both big and small, to be thankful for — is the true blessing. It is all too easy in our world to fall into the trap of complaining. Don’t get me wrong, I am not devoid of falling into this trap too, but when I do, I have to drag myself out pretty quickly. Complaining and blaming keeps us in a negative emotional vortex, which impacts our well-being and closes us off from seeing the good and beauty in our everyday lives.

Shifting to embracing GRATITUDE as a daily habit is a powerful perspective shift. The lens of your focus changes and the more you look to find things to be thankful for, the more you will find. And making it a regular habit, ten minutes per day, it soon becomes the norm. You will see more of the good and less of the bad in your world.

When I wrote the book ‘Write to Heal’, it was clear to me that developing an ‘attitude of gratitude’ is a key step in the healing process. It is a powerful ally to shift negative moods and mindsets.

How do I know?

Well, because I have tested it in my own life, and when I make it a daily habit to write my gratitude list, my life shifts too. I feel happier and lighter. I see more good in the world than bad. I see the potential in people. I find that I can deal with ‘blips’ easier because I know they are only a minor bump along the road of my life journey.

Why not try it out for yourself?

Start today and either observe or write down TEN things that you are thankful for in your life. Once you get started this list can quickly grow. I recommend start with TEN and do this for one month and see how your life starts to change. TEN things and only TEN minutes…

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Today and Every Day!

With Love & Blessings

Reading and Writing

, , ,

The more that you read, the more things you will know.

— Dr. Seuss

Someone asked me recently when did I discover my love for reading and books.

To be honest, I don’t remember books being part of my life when I was very young. I would love to say that there was a favourite bedtime storybook, but there wasn’t. My first contact with books happened when I started school at the grand old age of five.

I can still feel the excitement I felt when the teacher handed out our reading book. There, in bold print, on the front cover was my name. I was tickled with delight that out of all the girls’ names in my primary one class, it was mine on the cover. From that point onwards, I loved reading. I adored that the words on the page came together to tell a story, albeit a very short story of few words in my formative years.

I was won over to reading by seeing my name in print in my first reading book.

Books became my gift of choice on my birthdays and Christmases. Ladybird books were popular at the time and I had a little collection of fairy tales and fables, with Cinderella being one of my favourites. I could quite happily sit for hours on end re-reading the stories, almost to the point where I could recite them verbatim.

Infrequent visits to our local library were a highlight for me. I used to drive my mother and siblings mad by taking so long to choose my three books. So many books called to me and it hurt my heart to only be able to take three home at any given time. I also have vague recollections of a mobile library visiting our school, not sure how often it came, and have the distinct feeling these extra books made up the deficit in my life.

Fairy tales ignited my imagination for fantasy, leading me into the world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the Chronicles of Narnia. Followed swiftly by The Hobbit, and an introduction to wizards, dwarves, elves, dragons and Gollum. These were the books that saw me through the challenge of growing up in the midst of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. A time that was frightening and dangerous, and hard for my little mind to comprehend the violence on my doorstep. To escape the real world, I was more than happy to dive headlong into my books.

When I left home to go to Australia and finally ending up in London, via Manchester — books took a backseat to my real life adventures. However, dealing with a daily commute into central London soon called for my book buddies. Morning and night, I would sit on tube and train cradling a book and escaping the hum drum around me.

Reading may have come in fits and burst during my adult years, with a serious return to reading following a major emotional breakdown a decade ago. Books were a key part of my recovery, and I was more than happy to indulge my pleasure for reading, in particular, fantasy books. I, of course, read the Harry Potter series. But these just ignited my need for more. I was like an addict seeking the next ‘fantasy book’ fix. Bless all the wonderful authors who wrote the books that quelled my heart and revived my soul — Madeleine L’Engle, Rick Riordan, Cornelia Funke, Philip Pullman, Angie Sage and Eoin Colfer.

One of my favourite fantasy series by the loveable and witty Irish writer,
Eoin Colfer.

Now I read a diverse range of genre and include a few self-development books too, alongside a few chick-lit fun reads, punctuated with a smattering of classics.

Reading is key to learning, and it is, I believe, paramount for writers.

Without reading, we are now strengthing our craft. There are two sides to a book; the view of the author, and the journey for the reader. Both are equally important and must be considered. An author who writes without thinking of his/her reader is missing a key part of the puzzle. Reading is fuel for a writer, you expand your imagination, your word base and see how other writers have tackle different challenges/issues, both real or make believe.

Books are written to be read — and Writers need to Read.

So, you may ask what is my all-time favourite book?
My answer is there can never be just one…

The Power of CHOICES

, , , ,

Our CHOICES empower us and set us Free.

— Ellie J. Hart (Author of ‘I Choose… 52 Quotes to Inspire and Empower through Choices)

To choose or not to choose, that is the question…

I couldn’t choose. I was stuck.

Stuck in a holding pattern in my life – no moving forward or going back. It was like Groundhog Day, replaying the same bad scenes time and time again. This was my life for a long time. Too long.

My marriage was going down the pan. Two people living together in a state of bitterness. I’m not going to go into the details here, perhaps one day I will feel strong enough to tell that story, but not yet. I think you get the picture. Two people driving each other nuts, knowing how to press each other buttons to grate and provoke. Oh, unhappy days!

It was a cycle, one I knew only too well and one I knew deep down in my heart that it needed to end. Many of you will say ‘why didn’t you just walk away’, and I would agree with you, but FEAR kept me frozen in the never ending loop that was my reality. I guess I had secretly hoped that he would have walked away first, but then I should have realised that my pain and suffering was feeding his narcissistic ego.

Anyway, the Universe stepped in almost two years ago and put the spanner in the works to force the change. I had joined a bookclub, something for me and a chance to escape one night a week from the draining combat. The group were fun and friendly, and I derived great pleasure from the books each member took turns to select.

Then came a book that literally changed my life. The book of the month was ‘The Choice – Embrace the Possible‘ by Edith Eger. This book touched my soul in a profound way. Her experiences during the Holocaust wrenched at my heart and tears poured down my cheeks. Her story of survival through such cruelty was unbelievable, and it all came down to a CHOICE.

The CHOICE to survive no matter what.

This realisation shock me to my very core. Here was I stuck unable to make the CHOICE I needed to make to set myself free. It struck me that if a young Edith Eger could make a CHOICE to survive through such incredible suffering, I was capable of making the CHOICE to set myself free to live my life on my own terms.

It takes COURAGE to make big life changing choices, and I will admit it took me a further two months to get to a point where I believed in myself enough to go through with it, and when I did voice my decision, I was surprised at how calmly I was able to do it. My heart was fully onboard and knew it was the right thing for me.

Making the big difficult scary CHOICE was liberating.

From that point in my life I realised the power we have with the CHOICES we make. I no longer take a flippant view towards making important choices in my life. I now take time to examine and deliberate over them and check-in with myself to feel if they are right for me.

Taking back control of my CHOICES had given me back empowerment. I am no longer a victim — I am the boss of my life. I am now able to set clear boundaries, so I don’t feel taken advantage of. I find when I tune in and make a choice, I have clarity on my life purpose and where I’m heading.

Taking back control of our CHOICES is an important step in aligning with who we really are, and what we really want in our lives.

— Ellie J. Hart

My advice to anyone reading this, who feels stuck, is to really take a step back and consider carefully your choices. Tune in and listen to what your heart is telling you and then take the big brave step of making that choice with 110% conviction. Believe me, it will make a huge difference and set you free to enjoy your own miracluous life journey.

Dr Edith Eger’s book inspired me to change my life and through my experience I have learned about THE POWER OF CHOICES. In turn I wanted to pass on what I have learned, so I wrote my quote book to inspire you, and me, to make good choices every day that bring us further along the path to joy and happiness.

Life is full of fun, joy and happiness when we make the right choices to lead us there, so enjoy making those worthwhile choices.

With lots of love & blessings

Write Your Story

, , ,

Sharing your personal healing journey offers hope to others who are suffering. That’s your gift to the world!

— Janet Groom (Author & Book Coach)

Perhaps you are like me, you have read lots of books by people sharing their own story, their personal journey through a major life challenge. And importantly, how they found their way through the pain and suffering back to feeling alive again. Back to a place of finding joy in the little things in life.

These books have inspired me on my own trauma to triumph journey. They provided the much needed glimmer of hope. They provided a beacon of light to follow through until I was once again back on safe ground, able to breathe again and see the world from a new perspective.

The best of all, most of these books were written by people, normal people, just like you and me, who suffered and found their way through. They then used their learnings to grow and develop. They learned important life lessons that profoundly changed their lives. And, then, they went one step further – they made the huge decision to write a book about their experiences in an effort to share their story and pass on the baton of hope, while sharing the important lessons they discovered. These books are capable of making a powerful impact on the right person.

Your Story will offer Hope to others

It takes courage to step up and write a book, sharing your innermost pain and suffering, and sharing your vulnerability. Some authors are even brave enough to unveil secrets. Secrets kept hidden away from the world for fear of judgement and criticism. These writers truly are valiant heroes.

When I wrote my non-fiction book ‘Write to Heal: 10 Ways to Use Writing and Words to Boost Your Well-Being and Transform Your Life’. I felt called to share my healing journey through the pain of my infertiliy. It has been such a dark and scary time, taking several decades to finally come to terms with the reality that I would never have my own children.

The pain was so deep and raw, and I choose to become numb in order just to survive. I hide the truth away behind a wall, pretending to get on with my life. It was only when things hit rock bottom, that I finally got the help I needed. My healing journey began, and it took time to learn the skills to reach a point where I had accepted my fate and it no longer held my emotions to ransom. That was the pivotal point for me, I knew I could start to share my story with others, with the strong desire that it would go out into the world and offer that glimmer of hope to someone else who suffered as I did. It would let them know they are now alone, there is hope and guide them to start their own healing.

Writing the book was at times painful when, on occasions, some lingering deep-seated emotions broke through. Yet by doing so it was extremely cathartic. It allowed another layer of healing to take place at a much deeper level.

Writing my story was healing.

It was as if by writing down the words, I was setting myself free from my ‘old story’. The tight grip of pain lessened, and I could breathe again.

So many people I have spoken to who have been brave enough to share their hero’s journey, often claim to have experience the same results. And, there is nothing like receiving feedback from a reader, who has found the book an inspiration and helped them to make the changes they needed to find their path to heal.

Your Book is like a Helping Hand

Do you have a Trauma to Triumph story to tell?
Are you ready to make a difference to someone’s life by writing and sharing your story?

Book Coaching

, , ,

Books are the way to the soul. The words you write and the stories you tell touch hearts and transform lives.

— Janet Groom (Author & Book Coach)

Over the past few months, as I finally step up to become more visible in my capacity as a BOOK COACH, I have been asked ‘What is Book Coaching?’

Therefore, I felt I would answer the question and explain more about book coaching and my role in empowering amazing people to share their stories and bring uplifting and inspirational books into the world.

Before I get into the ins and outs of book coaching, I want to start by explaining how and why I found my way to this role, so that you understand it is much more a passion and I am driven to do this work, with a big vision in mind.

My love of books started back in my childhood growing up in the midst of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. As a highly sensitive child, I struggled with what was going on around me. All the bitterness, hatred and killing were too much — books were my way to cope. I escaped into my imagination, enjoying adventures in new fantasy worlds with incredible characters. Books saved me.

Later in my mid-20s, I was hit with the trauma of being diagnosed with early menopause. This rocked the very foundations of my dreams and aspirations. With no support offered to help me deal with such a monumental blow, I coped, the only way I could at the time, by shutting down my emotions to numb the pain. This went on for decades until the emotional dam burst. I was forced to face and accept the reality. It was the catalyst in my own transformation and healing journey. And, once again, books and words played a pivotal role in my healing process.

Eventually, through years of healing, I found my way to writing my first fiction novel (The Naked Knitting Club). Becoming a published author was something I had dreamed of doing since childhood. The muse delivered a great book idea and it stayed with me for over 15 years until I was ready to write it, when I did give myself permission to sit down and write the book, it was liberating.

My creativity flowed and I found my voice. I found a way to express myself through the words I wrote. Even though it was a fiction book, I was able to use it to transform my pain and promote further healing.

Writing is a powerful healing tool

Writing is deeply healing for me, and I felt compelled to share my learnings, which led me to pen my first non-fiction book ‘WRITE to Heal: 10 Ways to Use Writing and Powers to Boost Your Well-Being and Transform Your Life’. An easy-to-use guide of practical exercises to use writing and words in the healing process. Simple, yet highly effective, techniques — boosting well-being and transforming lives in a powerful and positive way.

It was after this I realised my BIG VISION.

I feel a strong desire to share the incredible power of writing with others, and to encourage amazing HEART-LED ENTREPRENEURS to share their own AUTHENTIC VOICE with the world to inspire and spread JOY.

Books, filled with your stories and words, are an incredible way to share your message and touch the hearts of readers across the world.

IMAGINE YOUR AUTHENTIC VOICE,
YOUR TRUTH,
IGNITING THE FLAME OF INSPIRATION
AND JOY IN HEARTS WORLDWIDE.

How can a BOOK COACH help you?

Using a plethora of skills gathered over a lifetime, I am here to support YOU on your author journey, making it an experience filled with EASE, FUN, OPENNESS and CREATIVE JOY.

I serve my Author-preneur clients with INTEGRITY, CREATIVITY and JOY, in the following ways:

Accountability

We work together to create an action plan, breaking the project down into digestible chunks. You set the goals and we have regular calls giving you deadlines to work towards. As a former project manager, I know how overwhelming a project may seem, and how with the right approach it becomes easily achievable.

Structure

In the planning stage we brainstorm your book idea and together create a plan and structure outline for you to work on. This is the ‘backbone’ of your book, which we then build on. This is a key stage of writing your book and good planning creates a solid foundation on which to work.

Feedback

Open and honest feedback is a valuable tool in the creative process. You have a sounding board to bounce ideas off, and you receive feedback on your writing, including editorial input to improve the delivery and flow of your message.

Mindset & Motivation

Ask any writer and you will hear how ‘self-doubt’ can often lead to inaction and that dreaded ‘writer’s block’. With my background as an NLP and Transformational Coach, I have great tools to assist you in building a confident writer’s mindset and keeping the creative flow open.

Technical Expertise

Having experience of publishing several books, and working with an Independent Publishing House, you have the value of my experience to ensure you are aware of all the ‘little details’ you need to consider when compiling a book to publish. You also have access to an amazing editing and publishing team to remove frustration and allow you to bring a professionally produced book into the world. Additional marketing strategy ideas are offered to promote your book and your visibility as an expert in your niche.

AS A BOOK COACH, I EMPOWER ENTREPRENEURS

INSPIRE JOY AND GAIN FINANCIAL FREEDOM.

Writing a book is a powerful journey for the author and when the book is written in the right way with the right energy, that comes across to the reader. It is a valuable tool to connect with people on a more profound level.
